Why Magnesium Glycinate over Magnesium Oxide/Carbonate?

Bioavailability drives this difference.  Organic salts (eg, magnesium glycinate/citrate/chloride/lactate/aspartate/gluconate) are better absorbed than inorganic salts (eg, magnesium oxide/carbonate), which is the key practical differentiator. Magnesium oxide is cheap but poorly bioavailable and more likely to cause osmotic diarrhea.

As a mood adjunct
A positive open-label depression randomized clinical trial (RCT) used 248 mg elemental magnesium chloride with improvement in PHQ-9 and GAD-7 within 2 weeks. Stress-focused trials used 300 mg/day (±vitamin B6). Meta-analysis supports a beneficial effect on depression scores.

As a sleep adjunct
Trials pooled by Mah et al. used doses generally under 1 g given up to three times daily, reducing sleep-onset latency by ~17 minutes.
The VA/DoD guideline reviewed magnesium oxide 414 mg BID / 403 mg TID and citrate 640 mg AM + 320 mg HS.
A melatonin-magnesium combination trial used 200 mg elemental magnesium at night.

What are side effects and/or precautions?

Diarrhea and GI discomfort are the dose-limiting, dose-related adverse effects; starting low and titrating up mitigates this.
For patients who have kidney impairment, it would be advised to seek further discussion with their doctor as impaired renal clearance raises the risk of hypermagnesemia (eg, hypotension, ileus, muscle weakness, lethargy, and at extreme doses: cardiac arrest). 

Please note that guidelines do not endorse magnesium as an established therapy, with the VA/DoD insomnia guideline stating "neither for nor against" recommendation due to citing low-quality evidence and benefit (sleep-onset latency) balanced against the main adverse effect of soft stools/diarrhea.
